As for a design wall, there are some "cheap" alternatives. A friend has a curtain rod that usually holds a wall quilt, and she took some flannel, stitched a rod pocket, and got a dowel for it. She takes down the quilt and puts up the flannel when she needs to see a layout. I took an inexpensive tablecloth and used thumbtacks to hold it on the wall in my laundry room, which is next to my sewing area. It works, and cost under $5.
